Changing your IP """"""""""""""""" ## Basic Definitions ## What is an IP? An IP stands for Internet Protocol, its a unique series of numbers which Identifies the computer on a network, and the internet. How can I find out my IP? There are a number of methods, most commonly used is a windows utility called winipcfg.exe. To access it either look in your windows directory or in command prompt(MS-DOS) or run type winipcfg. A small window should appear, your ip is displayed in the boxed named "IP Address". If you are connected to the internet or on a DSL/Cable connection it will show the IP currently being used otherwise 0.0.0.0 will be displayed. Another method is to use a site such as http://www.whatismyip.com. There are numerous other methods but the ones described are the most commonly used. What can someone do with my IP? An IP should never given out unless completely nessesary as its a address to your computer which hackers/crackers can use to access your computer. Alot of people will send you a "trojan horse" or "RAT - Remote administration tool" and will require your IP to activate it. An advanced hacker/cracker would scan your computer looking for possible security holes or exploits and would need an IP to do so. There are many things people can do with an IP so try and not reveal it. How do I get someones IP? Well I have written a tutorial on this but I will tell you anyhowz, if you want to see the tutorial its somewhere on Astalavista. Theres are a few different methods to obtaining an IP: Using netstat : This is the method I use if I need to get someones, open Command Promp/Dos prompt. During a direct connection so eg on msn when sending a file type netstat -n. This will then return all IP's connected to your computer at this time. If you know the designated port the service you are trying to obtain the ip of. Eg Msn is 1689 I think. Http is 80, 25 is smtp. Just look for a port listing if you want to know more. Email headers : To obtain it from an email you must put advance headings on, in hotmail its in the advanced options. The IP is displayed in the header MIME settings are not important unless you want to ensure the email is genuine, but im sure you wont need this. Firewall logs : Your firewall every connection to your computer write it all down in a log, this log is usually saved in the root directory of the firewall. They will be pretty massive so its not going to be easy but most list time date etc . Pager : A pager is a little program which resides on the targets computer informing the attacker of the ip, these are used when trying to hack someone with a "dynamic IP" as it constantly changes. IP Catcher : These are used in chat rooms and simply use winsock and return the ip connected for instant is your ip was 123.5.5.6 then you would send a link 123.5.5.6:1234 which means it would connect on an open port and the program would listen on this port and return the IP. There are more advanced ones that encrypt your IP so a hacker doesnt get it, although this isnt fool proof as if the algorithm or equation used is discovered then it can soon be worked out. What is a dynamic IP? A dynamic IP is used on Dial up connection or 56k. What a dynamic IP is every time the computer reconnects via the dial up the IP changes. This means IP's would have to be used quickly if obtained before the user disconnects. What is a static IP? Its pretty self explanitory the IP stays the same and doesnt change unless you ask your ISP. What is a firewall? A firewall is a piece of hardware or software used to protect a computer from a attack. What it does is close the ports not being used, and listens to all the ports to check that no attacks are being performed. A good software firewall is Agnitum Outpost. What is an ISP? An ISP stands for Internet Service Provider, which is in short is who provides you with your internet connection e.g AOL. ## Changing your IP ## There are a few different way's to change your IP. If you have a dial up connection, all you need to do is disconnect and reconnect and your IP should be different. This IP is called dynamic because it changes. If you have broadband, DSL, Cable, T3(dam you!) then its not so simple. One method commonly used is to phone up your ISP and report that a "hacker" has obtained your IP and your scared something bad might happen. Occasionally a ISP wont change your IP for you if thats the case you could change ISP's or... use a "proxy"! What is a proxy? A proxy is a server which channels remote pc's internet traffic. They can : - Speed up your internet connection - Make you anonymous ## Using a proxy ## Using a proxy is simple, but can take some time to get one up and running. There are programs which help speed up the process one of which is Multiproxy http://www.multiproxy.org. First you need to download Multiproxy and download the list of anonymous proxies under the download section. Now you need to install it. Once installed open internet options in control panel and click on connections and then Settings. The second panel in the window just opened say's proxy server. Click in the box so its checked/ticked. Now enter as the proxy 127.0.0.1 which is localhost or in other words the computer your on. Now enter the port as 8080. Now click ok. Go back to multiproxy and click options and find the option to load the proxylist that you downloaded. When its checked delete all non anonymous and non responding proxies. If you want to add just one www.samair.ru/proxy has a large list. Now make sure its all set up ok and go to www.whatismyip.com DO NOT USE WINIPCFG, as your real IP will still be displayed. Now check the ip's if there different you have another IP :).*Please note proxies will reduce your internet speed*. You may also put a proxy where you put the 127.0.0.1.
